Berks Homes Design + Build

More than a kitchen. Living Space.

Kitchen shown in 720 Maple Espresso and 720 Painted Butterscotch Glaze

When a couple from Morgantown, Pennsylvania came to Berks Homes Design + Build for their remodel, they arrived with two key elements. A vision and a budget.

They had their savings in place to create a kitchen and living space that could host gatherings for their family and friends in style. Given their home was built in 1986, and their children were grown, it was definitely time to remodel.

These empty nesters’ wish list included a cook’s kitchen with plenty of storage and an open floor plan. They also wanted a traditional look accented with contemporary details and efficient appliances.

These homeowners chose Waypoint’s 720 Maple Espresso and Painted Butterscotch Glaze to create a unique dark and light look. Traditional door styles, wood floors, granite counters, tile backsplashes and crown molding were complemented with the latest innovations and furnishings. Decorative glass inserts in many cabinet doors upped the “Wow!” factor. Crown molding build-ups were so impactful that they were integrated beyond the kitchen and became part of the now larger living space.

Jon Detwiler, Architectural Designer, and Ben Horning, Project Manager of Berks Homes Design + Build, rose to the challenge and worked closely with the homeowners to come up with solutions that incorporated style and functionality. On demo day, when a claustrophobic, L-shaped kitchen wall came down, they cheered.

Decorative columns replaced that load-bearing wall and instantly created open space. No longer would a partitioned off kitchen keep these hosts from enjoying their own party. Cabinetry organization details like a pantry with multiple pull-out trays, an inventive spice drawer rack and a combination trash and recycling bin that neatly tucked away were specified.

Every detail met the homeowner’s needs—even the new island counter that was designed to accommodate the knees of a six-foot-four husband.

The homeowners were ecstatic with the results, which included an office area, a mini wet bar, and a laundry room. The project was completed in December, just in time for their first family gathering in the new space.

What a Christmas present! The collaborative process with designer, homeowner and Waypoint delivered beyond expectations and on budget.
