Ready to ring in the New Year with a house full of friends? We have some tips for the pre-party prep to make your NYE party a smash for you and your guests.
SET THE MOOD
Don’t put those Christmas string lights away just yet! Hang them over windows and doorways; string them back and forth across the ceiling, add some candles and lower-watt bulbs and voilà! The mood is set!
EVERYONE ON THE DANCE FLOOR
Before anyone shows up, think about how your guests will use your space. Will there be room to dance or play games? Think about how many people will be there and then add a few more. Is there enough seating for everyone? Can you move some furniture around to encourage conversation but also avoid banged-up shins and spilled cocktails? Look out for bottlenecks in the flow of traffic. Make sure the space is easily navigable and that people can flow from the buffet, to the drink station, and on to the dance floor.
LET THE MUSIC PLAY
Another important task to get out of the way ahead of time is your music playlist. Don’t get excited if you’re not a natural DJ, there are several smart phone apps, such as Spotify, that have NYE playlists already set up. All you have to do is download the app, if you don’t already have it, and find your favorite preset playlist. We found The Ultimate New Year’s Eve Party Playlist through the & Soul blog. There’s over four hours of music here to enjoy – so press play and forget about it!
Create a glittery selfie backdrop for guests to snap pictures and share the good times over and over. Provide plenty of hats and other props to make the pictures even better. You can also hang a large piece of paper and provide markers for guests to record their New Year’s resolutions.
When planning your menu, include dishes that don’t have to be kept hot or require plates and utensils. Think about snacks that can be held in your hand or with a napkin. This makes cleanup so much easier, plus creating less waste is great for the environment!
KEEP THE DRINKS FLOWING
When planning the arrangement for your party, remember to set up the drink station separately from the food serving area. You don’t want to create a traffic jam, but rather keep people flowing easily from one place to another. Waypoint Living Spaces® is a great option to create a unique buffet or sideboard to take your personal style from the kitchen into other spaces in your home. The finish you choose can either complement or contrast with your other kitchen cabinetry to make a statement piece that’s the focal point of the dining room or open-concept space. Cabinetry with glass doors and interior lighting provide an opportunity to show off pretty barware and other serving pieces.
For your drink station, choose glittery bar accessories to make the setting festive and fun. Include flowers or other décor to express your personal style. A signature cocktail is a great way to personalize your party and can be mixed in batches ahead of time. Here’s a video from HGTV for more tips on styling your holiday bar.
Now that you’ve set the mood, you’ve got to look just as fabulous! We’ve gone with a navy and gold theme for our party, so keep it going. Gold is a hot accent for both interior design as well as fashion, and according to some of the trend reports, we’ll be seeing a lot of deep, rich, navies in the coming months. According to Bobby Schuessler of WhoWhat Wear, dresses are going to be a little looser (less bodycon) this year. Boot cut / flared pants will also be popular.
Entertaining friends and family is another expression of your personal style. Have fun with it!
