So often we are asked, “How do I select a wood floor to go with my kitchen cabinets?” Just like the clothing you wear, contrast is important. Ideally, you’ll want flooring that provides contrast to your cabinets, not an exact match. There are many marvelous natural wood finishes and engineered wood floors that will work well.
Tip # 1
Should you already have wood floors in your home, consider using the same flooring throughout. This creates a cohesive, seamless look. Select contrasting cabinets with the color of your floor in mind.
Tip # 2
For new wood flooring, select a contrasting color. If your cabinets are a light tone, a dark or medium-toned floor will set them off, and vice versa.
Tip # 3
If you have painted cabinets, you may select from a range of floor colors or finishes. With white or cream cabinets, dark floors provide a nice contrast, however, medium or light tones can offer a subtle look.
Tip # 4
If you’re adventurous and would like to mix wood species, to provide more variation in color among the planks, be sure to choose a wood that has lots of natural variation.
Tip # 5
Remember, the style of your flooring is as important as the color. You don’t want to select a style that clashes with your kitchen’s style or other design elements. For example, rough-hewn floors look more at home in a rustic kitchen than in a sleek modern space.
